What is "Little Free Library@UPSI"?

Take a Book and Leave a Book

Little Free Library’ (LFL) UPSI is part of a community project under littlefreelibrary.org, a global non-profit organization that originated in the United States. The LFL concept is based on the principle of “Take a book and Leave a book,” which means that the books provided are free of charge. LFL is accessible 24 hours a day, with no return deadlines, no late fees, and no library membership required. The books offered are light reading materials such as children’s books, fiction, and non-fiction titles. These books are obtained through donations from businesses and individuals.

The LFL structure is placed in high-traffic public areas, such as train stations. For this pilot project, five train stations in the state of Perak have been selected: Tanjong Malim, Kampar, Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, and Taiping. PTB (Perpustakaan Tuanku Bainun) aims to expand this initiative to train stations across Malaysia in the future.

The ‘Little Free Library’ UPSI (LFL UPSI) was officially launched on 11 November 2022 by the Orang Besar Jajahan Muallim, YDH. Toh Paduka Setia Dato’ Ir. Dr. Safry Kamal bin Haji Ahmad. To achieve the main objective of the LFL UPSI program—which is to provide the public with free access to reading materials—Perpustakaan Tuanku Bainun (PTB) believes that the LFL structure is best placed in high-traffic public areas, such as train stations. In conjunction with the launch ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between UPSI and the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC), the body responsible for matters related to railway stations.

On 21 and 28 December 2022, the LFL structures and books were delivered to five selected train stations: Tanjong Malim, Kampar, Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, and Taiping. PTB extends its appreciation to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) for their collaboration in ensuring that the LFL units were placed in suitable and accessible locations for the public. It is hoped that passengers and surrounding communities will make full use of this facility to further cultivate a reading culture among Malaysians.
